Why Ramsey Clark?

Today we watched a very long trial for Saddam Hussein and his gang on the TV and I'm not trying to tell you what happened in the trial. There is something else that I want to write about and that is the presence of the former American justice minister Ramsey Clark in the court to defend Saddam Hussein.
I know that every defendant should have an attorney but it's really confusing why a respectable man like Ramsey would defend a criminal like Saddam?
Saddam is not a regular prisoner because if we ignored the details of what he have done the fact remain that through his acts and during his reign we and our neighbors lost about 2 millions of our people!
I'm sure that Ramsey is fully aware of what I'm talking about and he knows well that the man hands are full of blood and from every type so why would Ramsey defend him?
I cant imagine that he is looking for publicity or want to get more famous or he believe in any way that Saddam is innocent and he needs to prove that, then why? I really don’t have any kind of answer to this question.
And the bigger surprise that he inside the court accused the court of being illegitimate! We have an elected government (that most of the Arab countries and the third world don’t have) and this elected and legitimate government had appointed the court so why it's not legitimate in your opinion Mr. Ramsey Clark?!

Why you are there? I still don’t know but let me tell you that you won't gain the respect of the world by defending a tyrant but you will be hated by millions of the Iraqis and the Kuwaitis and the Iranians and the Americans who lost their beloved in the wars the dictator made.
And this trial will be like a stain you won't be able to erase from your history. One day we will remember and we will tell our children about the Americans who librated Iraq and your name wont be among them.

Sooni, your words go to the heart of the matter. Lisa is right - an America-hating lunatic. And, as we all know, there are others.

But most of us are so powerfully drawn to Iraqis' determination to right wrongs and establish your own place in the political world. We wish you all the very best.

In the USA, we believe that even the worst criminals deserve fair trials with competent lawyers serving the defendents.
This is honorable work--even if everyone "knows" that the defendent is guilty.
I question whether or not Ramsey Clark is, in fact, a competent attorney. His beliefs are so crazy that I am not sure he would help or hurt his client's case.

Personally, I think Saddam should also be tried for simpler crimes like corruption and embezzlement, etc. That would send a powerful message about how Iraqis want their future government to be honest and corruption-free.

the u.s. president (i forget his name)that appointed mr. clark said that it was the worst mistake he made in his presidency. maybe he really thinks saddam isnt a bad guy, but i think that he just wants to look important...when in reality he is coming off very dumb.

There is a sort of wierd leftist in the world that never met a dictator it didn't like, no matter how evil, as long as the guy is anti-American. Ramsey Clark is one of them.

Here's my 10 step plan on how to be a dictator of the sort that Ramsey Clark likes...

The fact that Ramsey Clark is defending a tyrant in court is not an issue -- it's proper that every criminal is allowed attorneys.

Now, as for why Ramsey Clark would seek out such a job, that's simple: He hates America and uses every opportunity to express that hatred (which, as an American, is something he has the freedom to do).

Where Mr Clark crosses the line is when he makes statements that question the legitimacy of the court you Iraqis have created. As someone who is not a citizen of Iraq, he is a guest of the Iraqis. Guests are not free to insult their hosts.

I totaly agree with the writer, it's a confusing thing that a man with a good reputation try to destroy his famous political life in a losing case like saddam's case, what's the idea behind putting your self in a position like that defending a criminal like Saddam who's responsible for the death of thousands of people without even letting them to have a fair trials like the one he is in right now.
I think the people that Saddam killed deserves more respect from those who are trying to defend that slayer .
Actually it's really confusing but may be in the next days we will hear the new that Ramsy clark has recieved ?$ dollars from Saddam like Gorge Galawi scandle.

Who knows ???????!!!!!!!!

Ramsey's been to bed with at least one two-bit dictator in every continent (Yes, even Bubbles XIII, the Evil Emperor Penguin Emperor of Antarctica). That was a joke, and so is Ramsey Clark.

I thik you actually have to kill at least a hundred (100) innocents for Ramsey to work on your case - I'll have to check his legal profile.

Re-read the posts here. Clark does NOT have a good reputation. His "alleged" good reputation, is just that...alleged. He is a scum sucking bottom feeder and has been a traitor to America for 35 years.

bah, Clark is an attention whore, period. And a major embarrassment to his country. Saddam will still be found guilty and executed so who cares.

Clark is an idiot but since America is a free country he is free to be an idiot. Don't worry He is not a good attorney!

ACTUALLY SADDAM HUSSEIN DESERVES TO BE DEFENDED BY AN INCOMPETENT ATTORNEY AND RAMSEY FITS THE BILL. HE CERTAINLY WILL NOT BE RECEIVING GOOD COUNSEL. HURRAY FOR THAT. RAMSEY, STAY ON THE JOB. SADDAM DESERVES THE WORST POSSIBLR LEGAL ADVICE AVAILABLE ON PLANET EARTH AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO RAMSEY IS ACT NATURALLY.

I have no love for Ramsey, but he plays a necessary role in the grand scheme, crazy as he may seem. If we as a "world community" are to expect fairness and justice, then we must hold ourselves to these standards as well, no matter how great a crime has been perpetrated against any one of us. Saddam must receive a fair trial if we are to keep in line with our own standards. While it seems sickening that he should be afforded the rights he denied to the millions he and his regime have killed, we have no alternative if we are to retain the moral high ground. Ramsey is a person who seems obsessed with this principle (possibly to a fault), but watchdogs like him are necessary to remind us how far our own shadow can fall.
